By Artificial intelligence could become one of the greatest equalising forces in history, or it could deepen the gap between those who have power and those who do not.
That is the central warning from Bill Gates in his latest Gates Notes essay, “The turbulent AI era is here. The choices we make now are critical.”
Gates argues that AI will transform work much faster than previous technological revolutions, potentially eliminating many entry and mid-level jobs while creating fewer new opportunities for people whose skills take years to develop.
But he does not see AI only as a threat.
Used deliberately, he says, it could accelerate breakthroughs in healthcare, agriculture, education, clean energy and scientific research, while giving individuals and small businesses access to capabilities that were once available only to large organisations.
The challenge, therefore, is not whether AI will advance. Gates believes the economic and geopolitical forces pushing it forward are already too strong to stop.
The real question is: Are governments and societies preparing quickly enough?
Among his proposals are creating new national and international frameworks for managing AI, protecting certain roles as “Human Reserved” work where human involvement remains essential, and reconsidering how labour and capital are taxed as machines take on more work.
His broader message is one worth paying attention to, particularly for developing countries: AI will not automatically benefit everyone.
Deliberate choices will be needed to ensure its gains do not remain concentrated among the wealthy and technologically advanced.
As Gates puts it, the world needs to start planning now so that the good outweighs the bad.
