By Moses Matovu, a defining figure in Uganda’s music whose career spanned more than 50 years, has died after he was allegedly attacked in one of Kampala’s suburbs.
According to a Kabalagala Police report, Matovu, a musician with Afrigo Band, was allegedly assaulted by unknown assailants on the morning of Thursday, September 24, 2026, at Kibuli Market Zone B in Makindye Division, Kampala.
He was rushed to Kibuli Hospital for medical attention, but later succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack.
Police at Kabalagala have registered a case of suspected murder and said a task team is at the scene conducting investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. Efforts are also underway to identify and apprehend the suspected assailants.
News of Matovu’s death has drawn musicians, friends and other Ugandans to Kibuli to mourn the veteran musician.
Among those gathered are Afrigo Band members, including singer Joanita Kawalya and Hon. Rachael Magoola, who have joined other mourners in paying their respects to the man whose music career helped shape Uganda’s live-band tradition.
Matovu was one of the founding figures of Afrigo Band and remained one of its most recognisable voices for decades. His death marks the loss of a musician whose career stretched across generations and left a lasting place in Uganda’s music history.
