Marking A Year Since Ndugu Dr Shaka Rested

March begins under the shadow of intensifying global tension. Fresh instability in the Middle East, punctuated by the deployment of new missiles, has once again placed the region at the centre of international concern. While humanitarian fears persist, the world watches closely as events unfold with far-reaching implications.

Yet even as global headlines dominate, March carries a deeply personal weight for many in the Ugandan diaspora.

For us, this month marks exactly one year since our mentor and brother, Shaka Ssali, rested, which calls for reflection and gratitude to the legacy he entrusted to us.

The family is planning a memorial in Kabale in his honour, bringing together his sister, relatives and friends to celebrate the life of a man whose voice resonated far beyond borders.

Last December, during the Homecoming Gala, the Uganda Diaspora Network had the honour of celebrating Dr Shaka Ssali with a Posthumous Award in recognition of his distinguished contribution to journalism and to the global Ugandan community. The award was received by Helen, Shaka’s sister, on behalf of the family.

The evening was further elevated by a powerful and heartfelt poetic tribute delivered by Princess Margaret-Anne Mazzi Wampamba, whose words captured the depth of admiration, pride and enduring gratitude felt across the diaspora for Ndugu Shaka.

As the year advances, March reminds us of all those who shaped us and continue to guide us in memory, in principle and in purpose.

Continue to rest in peace Nduggu Shaka.
