When a Ugandan Family’s Past Meets World History – A King at One

A deeply personal moment from a Ugandan family’s past is becoming a story for the world. Lovingly carried forward by Prince Nicholas Basamula’s daughters, this book transforms memory into history and history into a shared legacy.

A King at One tells the story of Kabaka Daudi Chwa II, crowned King of Buganda at just one year old and raised within one of Africa’s most sophisticated historical societies. His leadership journey reveals how influence is intentionally shaped from an early age through mentorship, guardianship, discipline, and the foundational act of learning to listen.

Set within the historical context of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt’s 1909 African expedition, A King at One forms part of the Roosevelt Encounters Africa series. The narrative presents the Kingdom of Buganda as a structured, highly organised society, challenging assumptions of the era and offering a richer understanding of African leadership traditions.

Guided by the theme “Start Early, Reign Early,” the book presents leadership not as position, but as preparation. The story invites readers to recognise a universal truth, which influence is built long before public recognition.

This milestone was celebrated with an official book launch and celebration at Harvard University that would feature Prince Nicholas Basamula with the public, friends and family on Saturday, March 28, 2026.
