By The Ministry of Local Government has reminded all public servants that they are not eligible to contest in the ongoing Local Council elections unless they have lawfully vacated their positions in public service.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the Minister of Local Government, Hon. Barugahara Balaam Ateenyi, said public servants, including teachers, health workers, administrative staff, extension workers and other government employees, are required to resign from public service at least 30 days before nomination if they intend to contest for any Local Council position.
The Minister cited Section 129(5) of the Local Governments Act, which requires public officers seeking elective office to first leave public service within the prescribed timeframe.
The Ministry also emphasised that public officers are expected to remain politically neutral while serving in government. It noted that participating in partisan political activities, including contesting for elective office without first resigning, is contrary to the law.
The Ministry said it will continue working closely with the Electoral Commission and other relevant authorities to ensure full compliance with the law during the Local Council electoral process.
It further called upon all Ugandans to participate peacefully in the ongoing Local Council elections.
