By The US Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery, commonly known as the Green Card Lottery, is expected to open for the DV-2027 programme, but prospective applicants should be cautious about claims that registration is already open.
As of September 5, 2026, the US Department of State has not announced the official opening date for DV-2027 registration. The department has said that the registration start date and the date for checking selection results will be announced separately.
It is also important to note that DV-2026 is not the current lottery. Registration for DV-2026 took place from October 2 to November 7, 2024. The upcoming registration is for DV-2027.
The Diversity Visa programme provides a pathway to US permanent residence for eligible applicants from countries with historically low levels of immigration to the United States. Selection is conducted randomly, but being selected does not automatically guarantee a visa. Selected applicants must still meet the programme’s eligibility and immigration requirements.
For Ugandans and other prospective applicants, the safest approach is to wait for the official DV-2027 announcement and apply only through the US government’s designated Diversity Visa website. The State Department also warns that only one entry per person is permitted during each registration period.
Applicants should be particularly wary of individuals or websites claiming that DV-2027 registration is already open or asking for money to submit an entry before the official registration period begins.
